43rd Anniversary Of the Black July 1983 Anti-Tamil Pogrom — One Of the Defining Acts Of Genocide Committed by the Sri Lankan State Against the Tamil People
Today, July 23, 2026, marks the 43rd anniversary of the Black July 1983 Anti-Tamil Pogrom, one of the defining acts of genocide committed by the Sri Lankan state against the Tamil people in the island of Sri Lanka. On this solemn occasion, Tamil people in Canada, in Tamil Eelam — the historical, traditional, and ancestral homeland of the Eelam Tamil people in the island of Sri Lanka and across the global Tamil diaspora, together with allies and supporters, unite to honour and remember the Tamil people who lost their lives during the Black July 1983 Anti-Tamil pogrom. We also honour the incredible strength and enduring resilience of the Tamil people — a resilience that will never be extinguished — while standing in unwavering solidarity with the victims, survivors, and their descendants.
Chemmani Mass Grave: an act of Tamil Genocide
Marking one year since UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk visited the site and 28 years after it first drew international attention, renewed excavations at the Chemmani Mass Grave in Jaffna have uncovered at least 412 sets of human remains, making it the largest mass grave in Sri Lanka. In response, the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) has issued an urgent call for Canada and the international community to step in. Because successive Sri Lankan governments and domestic bodies have failed to deliver accountability, the NCCT is demanding independent international forensic oversight, the secure preservation of evidence, the establishment of an international prosecutorial mechanism, and remedial justice to end decades of state-sanctioned impunity for the Tamil Genocide.
NCCT Demands the Release of Tamil Artist Sangeethsan Ganeshkumar Sri Lanka Continues to Use the PTA to Carry Out the Ongoing Genocide Against the Tamil People
The National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) strongly condemns the June 2, 2026, arbitrary arrest and subsequent remand of Tamil artist and rapper Sangeethsan Ganeshkumar, known as hip-hop Sangee, under the Sri Lanka's draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and calls for his immediate and unconditional release, as well as the release of all other Tamil political prisoners and detainees held under the PTA.
