The National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) expresses its deep condemnation of the recent act of vandalism that took place at the Tamil Genocide Monument at Chingcousy Park in Brampton. Today morning, on June 15, 2025, there was destruction of most lighting fixtures that illuminate the important aspects of the Tamil Genocide Monument. A similar act of vandalism also took place at the Tamil Genocide Monument on the night of May 27, 2025. This deliberate and reprehensible act of desecration not only disrespects the memory of the victims of the Tamil Genocide but also undermines the values of truth, reconciliation, and mutual respect that are foundational to our diverse Canadian society.

NCCT requests the Peel Regional Police and the City of Brampton to work with all relevant authorities to investigate this incident based on the photos and videos captured by surveillance cameras along with other evidence to hold those responsible accountable.

The primary structure of the Tamil Genocide Monument remains intact and we reassure that it will continue to serve as a place for the Tamil Canadian community to come together to commemorate and memorialize the Tamil Genocide. It also allows us to share our painful traumatic experiences and to educate our fellow Canadians about the Tamil Genocide.

In the Tamil people's long resilient journey in seeking international recognition, international accountability and remedial justice for the genocide being committed against Tamil people by the Sri Lankan state, this Tamil Genocide Monument is an important milestone.

Acts of vandalism such as this are not isolated incidents but are part of a broader pattern of Tamil Genocide denial and distortion. Such acts of intolerance and hate seek to erase painful histories and further exacerbate the trauma of the Tamil people. The deliberate and continuous attempts to target the Tamil Genocide Monument clearly suggests, that the Tamil Genocide deniers are actively working to silence the victims of the Tamil Genocide.

The Sri Lankan state has been perpetrating deliberate, aggressive, covert and overt foreign interference against the Tamil diaspora in Canada and internationally for years. Sri Lanka's foreign interference in Canada attempts to undermine the advocacy efforts of Tamil Canadians.

NCCT urges members of the Tamil Canadian community to be vigilant and stand united to combat Sri Lanka's foreign interference in Canada targeting Tamil Canadians. It is important that all Tamil Canadians are aware of any potential threats and increase the collective resilience against Sri Lanka's foreign interference in Canada together. We also ask that Tamil Canadians take efforts in reporting Sri Lanka's deliberate, aggressive, covert and overt foreign interference actions in Canada to your local law enforcement authorities. As Tamil people, it is extremely integral that we do not let this act of vandalism deter us but allow us to maximize our efforts collectively to continue to stay engaged and provide ongoing support efforts to combat Tamil Genocide denial and distortion in Canada and internationally.

Let's stand together and collectively combat Tamil Genocide denial and distortion in Canada and internationally!
