Tamil Genocide Monument

A landmark memorial in Brampton honouring the victims of the Tamil Genocide.

The Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton is a landmark initiative led by the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) in partnership with the City of Brampton. The monument honours the victims of the Tamil Genocide and serves as a space for remembrance, education, and awareness.

Under the leadership of Patrick Brown, Brampton became the first municipality in Canada to formally recognize the Tamil Genocide and declare Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day on May 18, encouraging similar recognitions across the country. In January 2021, Brampton City Council unanimously approved the development of the monument at Chinguacousy Park following consultations with Tamil community leaders.

The project officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 18, 2023. The foundation stone was later laid on August 14, 2024, during a ceremony at Chinguacousy Park. Scheduled to be unveiled in May 2025, marking the 16th anniversary of the genocide's peak, the monument will stand as a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives and a call for international recognition, accountability, and justice.
