NCCT Thanks Canada's Commitment to Protecting Tamil Canadians from Sri Lanka's Foreign Interference

The National Council of Canadian Tamils expresses gratitude to Prime Minister Trudeau for reaffirming Canada's protection of Tamil Canadians against foreign interference. The organization calls for stronger measures to combat ongoing threats from the Sri Lankan state.

Prime Minister Reaffirms Protection Commitment

On October 16, 2024, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly reaffirmed Canada's commitment to protecting Tamil Canadians from Sri Lanka's foreign interference while testifying at the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral processes and Democratic Institutions.

"On behalf of the Tamil Canadians, the National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) would like to thank the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his commitment to protecting Tamil Canadians from Sri Lanka's foreign interference in Canada."

Decades of Systematic Foreign Interference

The Sri Lankan state continues to perpetrate deliberate, aggressive, covert and overt foreign interference against the Tamil diaspora in Canada and internationally. This sustained campaign has become a significant threat to Tamil Canadians' wellbeing, safety, and security, as well as their fundamental rights and freedoms.

The interference poses broader implications for Canada's democratic integrity, threatening the political system and democratic processes and institutions. Tamil Canadians have experienced the impact of foreign interference across multiple sectors:

  • Individual Tamil Canadians targeted
  • Tamil Canadian businesses compromised
  • Community organizations infiltrated
  • Religious, cultural, academic, arts, entertainment and sports institutions disrupted

The interference extends to Tamil Canadians running for public office, those elected to positions, individuals traveling abroad, and those visiting family in Sri Lanka.

Undermining Advocacy and Justice Efforts

Sri Lanka's foreign interference campaign actively attempts to undermine Tamil Canadian advocacy efforts on critical issues:

  • International recognition of the Tamil Genocide
  • International accountability and remedial justice
  • Political solutions based on Tamil people's right to self-determination
  • Combating Tamil Genocide denial and distortion

Sophisticated Methods of Interference

Sri Lanka's ongoing foreign interference operates through various channels, including government agents and proxy organizations. The interference takes multiple forms:

  • Surveillance and harassment
  • Threats and intimidation
  • Deception and manipulation
  • Discreditation and coercion
  • Disinformation and misinformation campaigns
  • Online influence operations
  • Digital transnational repression
  • Disruption of public events
  • Targeting government officials
  • Undermining democratic processes

Call for Community Unity and Vigilance

NCCT urges Tamil Canadians to remain vigilant and stand united against foreign interference. The organization emphasizes the importance of collective awareness and resilience in combating these threats.

"It is important that all Tamil Canadians are aware of any potential threats and increase the collective resilience against Sri Lanka's foreign interference in Canada together."

The organization encourages community members to report any instances of foreign interference to local law enforcement authorities.

Demanding Stronger Government Action

While thanking the Prime Minister for his commitment, NCCT calls for more robust action from the Canadian government. The organization urges Canada to take additional measures to combat Sri Lanka's foreign interference and send a clear message that such activities will not be tolerated.

The NCCT's statement represents the concerns of Tamil Canadians nationwide who continue to face systematic interference in their daily lives, political participation, and advocacy efforts for justice and accountability.
