The National Council of Canadian Tamils (NCCT) extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) for recognizing the Tamil Genocide and supporting the Tamil people's right to self-determination.

On October 9, 2025, the Scottish Parliament motion (S6M-19300), submitted by MSPs Bill Kidd, MSP for Glasgow Anniesland of the Scottish National Party, and supported by MSP Karen Adam, MSP Clare Adamson, MSP Stephanie Callaghan, MSP Bob Doris, MSP James Dornan, MSP Gordon MacDonald, MSP Fulton MacGregor, MSP Paul McLennan, MSP Stuart McMillan, MSP Carol Mochan, MSP Kevin Stewart, and MSP Mercedes Villalba, acknowledged the mass atrocities committed against the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, particularly during the final stages of the armed conflict in May 2009, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Tamil civilians.
The motion also recognized the findings of United Nations reports and successive UN Human Rights Council resolutions documenting credible allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and systemic persecution of Tamils. It called on the government of the United Kingdom to advocate at the United Nations for a UN-monitored referendum on Tamil self-determination in the North-East of Sri Lanka, in accordance with international legal standards.
NCCT deeply appreciates the leadership and moral courage shown by Bill Kidd and the supporting Members of the Scottish Parliament for standing in solidarity with the Tamil people. Their recognition of the Tamil Genocide and support for the Tamil people's legitimate political aspirations sends a powerful message of accountability and justice.
For the Eelam Tamil people, this motion represents another meaningful step towards international recognition of the Tamil Genocide, perpetrated by the Sri Lankan state, and the inalienable right of the Eelam Tamil people to selfdetermination. NCCT calls upon parliaments and governments across the world to follow Scotland's example in recognizing the Tamil Genocide and upholding the Eelam Tamil people's inalienable right to self-determination.
The NCCT continues to advocate for international recognition, international accountability, and remedial justice for Tamil Genocide. The NCCT also continues to advocate for a permanent political solution grounded in the Tamil people's inalienable right to self-determination - one that addresses Tamil people's legitimate political aspirations in their traditional homeland on the island of Sri Lanka and contributes to sustainable peace and stability in the IndoPacific region.
