Tamil Canadian organizations across the country strongly condemn the recent wave of xenophobic rhetoric and racially charged attacks directed at the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety. These attacks - rooted in prejudice and misinformation - not only undermine Minister Anandasangaree's professionalism and longstanding record of public service but also reflect a troubling pattern of intolerance toward Tamil Canadians by some.

A recent Global News article titled "Public safety minister asks officials to 'screen' him from conflict of interest", authored by Stewart Bell and Mercedes Stephenson, raises serious concerns. The article questions the Minister's past, particularly his legal advocacy for Tamil refugees who arrived in Vancouver by boat following the height of the Tamil Genocide in 2009 where hundreds of thousands of Tamil people were killed or disappeared during this period at the hands of the Sri Lankan state.
In Canada, all levels of government have formally recognized genocide committed against Tamil people by Sri Lankan state. Rather than recognizing the context of Tamil refugees fleeing genocide, the article focuses narrowly on their method of arrival, invoking harmful stereotypes. This not only unfairly pressures Minister Anandasangaree to "screen" himself from issues relating to the Tamil people, but also paints all Tamil Canadians in a negative and unjust light.
The article also features commentary from former CBSA officer Kelly Sundberg, who questions Minister Anandasangaree's suitability for his role-an insinuation we strongly reject. Such remarks are not only unfounded but deeply offensive.
Tamil Canadians are proud contributors to every facet of Canadian society. We take pride in the appointment of Minister Anandasangaree-by Prime Minister Mark Carney-to the critical portfolio of Public Safety. His record speaks for itself: elected in 2015, he has served Canadians as Parliamentary Secretary, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and now as Public Safety Minister.
We thank Prime Minister Carney for placing his trust in Minister Anandasangaree and affirm our full confidence in his ability to serve and protect the people of Canada. No public servant should be made to distance themselves from their community simply for advocating justice and human rights.
Despite continuing to endure structural genocide and carrying unhealed wounds, Tamil people are further harmed by articles like this - deepening their pain, misrepresenting their struggle, and reinforcing dangerous narratives that attempt to silence their lived experiences.
